My ADHD Has Made Me a More Humble Parent. Turns Out, I Kind of Needed That.
Parenting is often seen as a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and endless opportunities for growth. For comedian Darcy Michael, the experience of being a parent has been shaped by his ADHD in ways he never expected.
“I used to think parenting was about having answers,” Darcy reflects. “But my ADHD has taught me that sometimes, it's okay not to have all the answers. It's about being present, understanding, and adaptable.”
Living with ADHD can present its own unique set of challenges, from difficulty focusing to impulsivity and restlessness. But for Darcy, these challenges have become powerful lessons in humility and patience.
When his son was diagnosed with ADHD, Darcy's perspective on parenting shifted. Suddenly, he found himself navigating the complexities of parenting a child with the same condition he had struggled with for years.
“Having ADHD myself, I thought I knew exactly what my son needed,” Darcy explains. “But I quickly realized that every child is different, and what works for me may not work for him.”
Through this realization, Darcy learned the importance of listening, empathy, and understanding. He discovered that being a parent isn't about having all the answers, but rather about being willing to learn, grow, and adapt alongside your child.
“My ADHD has made me a more humble parent,” Darcy admits. “It's taught me to be patient, to be open-minded, and to embrace the journey of parenthood with all its ups and downs.”
As Darcy navigates the challenges of parenting with ADHD, he has come to appreciate the unique perspective it has given him. He understands the importance of self-care, boundaries, and seeking support when needed.
“Parenting with ADHD isn't always easy,” Darcy reflects. “But it has taught me valuable lessons in compassion, resilience, and acceptance. I wouldn't trade it for anything.”
For Darcy, parenting with ADHD has been a journey of self-discovery, growth, and humility. Through the highs and lows, he has emerged as a more patient, compassionate, and understanding parent.
“My ADHD has made me a better parent,” Darcy concludes. “It has taught me to embrace my imperfections, to celebrate my strengths, and to approach parenthood with an open heart and mind. Turns out, I kind of needed that.”
